Edinburgh win on aggregate 99-81

The Berwick "KLS" Bandits (Powered by Mike Hope of Wooler) had a steep mountain to climb last night after Friday's first leg of their cup quarter final at the Edinburgh Monarchs which - after a good start for the Shielfield side - descended to a disappointing 24 point defeat for the Border side, making them firm underdogs.

However the Monarchs roasted Heat One with a solid 5-1 with Ricky Wells and Victor Palovaara way ahead of Kevin Doolan and Aaron Summers, while a Bandits 4-2 in Heat Three did a little to haul the Berwick side two points closer, but on the night it was 8-10 to Edinburgh and overall on aggregate the Bandits lagged 44-70 following a Heat Four share won by Erik Riss way ahead of Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen and Dany Gappmaier.

Wells and Palovaara hit another visitors' max over Howe and the retired Etheridge but with a physical first bend from Summers and Doolan in Heat Six over Erik Riss gave the Bandits a 5-1 of their own taking the score on the night 17-19, and overall 50-76, leaving Berwick with still a lot of work to do over the last nine heats of the match.

Mark Riss went down heavily on the first bend of Heat Seven, but was in good shape for the all-four re-run, in which Josh Pickering made the bets gate of his night to win well over Pijper and Busk Jakobsen in a shared 3-3 and the Monarchs still led on aggregate by 26 points.

Doolan and Gappmaier made the perfect pair of gates in Heat Eight well over Palovaara who missed his gate to hit a 5-1 and pull the Bandits into the lead by two on the night, but the overall deficit at 22 points started to look too daunting a task heat by heat, and while a fall from Mark Riss in Heat 10 when in third placed gave the Bandits a 3-3 behind Pickering, mathematically, barring 5-0 results, the tie was lost to Berwick as Edinburgh progressed to the semi-finals.

Team manager Scott Courtney said: "We never really got into the groove early on tonight as we had to hit the Monarchs hard from Heat One, and all they did was pull of some massive gates and leave us standing, and unfortunately we just couldn't find top gear in time, although later on in the meeting tonight we did show them who was boss, winning Heats eight to 14 by 27-15! I think the damage to our cup hopes was done the night before at Edinburgh.

"So congratulations to the Monarchs who thoroughly deserved their aggregate victory. Good luck to them in the semi as we get back on track for the League title starting next week against Workington away then home!"
