The Berwick "Mike Hope of Wooler Ltd." Bandits (Powered by Clear Energy Consulting) have started their Shield campaign like a train sitting atop the Borders Group on 10 points from four matches and were keen to go to Edinburgh last night and take more points in their penultimate group fixture, the reverse fixture tomorrow night at Shielfield Park (7.00pm) being their last, and they pushed the home side all the way!

Without Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen (at the Danish Championships) and Jye Etheridge (injured) the Bandits' management drafted in Josh Bates as a guest and rider replacement for the latter, while having drawn the opening race, Heat Two took a long time to complete with Leon Flint falling at the first ask with his exclusion, followed by Luke Ruddick doing similar again with his exclusion.

The two-man re-run saw Berwick's Coty Garcia beat William Lawson in a cracking match-race as the Bandits led 5-6, before Kevin Doolan took the third passing Joel Andersson and Josh Pickering on the last laps to share the heat, while despite guest Bates excellent efforts, the fourth was won by Cameron Heeps in a 4-2.

Summers took the fifth over Pickering in a 2-4 before Wells took the sixth over Bates in a reversal 4-2 taking the score to a tight Monarchs' lead 18-17, and Doolan led Heat Seven well until Heeps eased past the Bandit's skipper on the last lap with Lawson in third in the 4-2 that put Edinburgh three points ahead.

Garcia turned his Heat seven last on its head to win Heat Eight well from the gate over Justin Sedgmen as Bates tucked in for third as Berwick cut the home lead to one point again, 24-23 while Bates and Garcia were on their way to a Bandits' maximum in the ninth race until Pickering took them both to lead in the home 4-2.

After a Heat 10 home maximum, tactical substitute Bates took a great three points in the 11th over Heeps while Lawson made Summers' third a tough one to win in the 2-4 result narrowing the home lead to five points, while Heats 12 and 13 saw the sides hammer out another 4-2 each to go into the final two races with the Monarch five up.

Doolan and Garcia made it easy from the Heat 14 gate to take a vital 1-5 over Andersson leaving the Bandits trailing by only one point with one heat to run and it left to Heeps and Wells for Edinburgh and Summers and the guest Bates to do the business for the Bandits in Heat 15.

Wells touched the tapes and took a 15 metre handicap before Bates fell in the re-run and excluded by the referee meaning barring engine failures in the Edinburgh camp, Berwick could only draw the second re-run, in which Summers roared away to take the three points ending the match 45-44, and giving the home side the narrowest of victories.

Team manager Gary Flint said: "To push a team like Edinburgh as hard as we did tonight, on a track where everyone expects us to crash and burn is always satisfying, and while we fell short of the win by a point or two, that's really frustrating as we could have won, but at least we took one Shield point and now we're on 11 with the home against Edinburgh to come on Saturday night when we aim to go several better!

"Tonight Matty Wethers comes in for Jye with rider replacement for Nikolaj."
