The sides rode to a cracking draw just 24 hours earlier, but the Berwick Bandits believed they missed out on a win having been eight up twice in the match, so returned home to Shielfield Park last night to welcome the Workington Comets with the aim of no tripping up and getting that win second time round, but the pre-meeting feeling was it was going to be another close one, and how right that was.

Workington had Rene Bach back after his night off, but were without Nicolai Klindt who was away on European Championship duty while Ashley Morris of Newcastle guested for Bradley Wilson-Dean who picked up an injury in a clash with Jye Etheridge on Friday.

However it was the Comets who seemed keenest to smack their authority on the match early on with a Comet's 1-5 to Bach and Rasmus Jensen over Kevin Doolan and Aaron Summers, and despite a heat win for Dany Gappmaier in the third race- Berwick's only heat advantage in the opening four heat, after four the score was 10-14 as Berwick looked sluggish from the gate once again.

Jensen went through the tapes in Heat Five and was replaced by Morris, but Gappmaier was away from the gate again David Howe pushing through to second in a Bandits' 5-1 to level the match at 15-all, but Proctor followed Bewley home in Heat Seven to inflict a maximum defeat on Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen and John Lindman to again put Workington four-up.

However Doolan and Etheridge then Gappmaier and Howe hit two solid 5-1s into the pot despite a good challenge from Bach in third to take the score four in favour of the Bandits, 29-25, before going into the interval Summers shot away to fly round Proctor and take the win with Doolan pressing hard all the way behind Proctor in a 4-2 to take the score to 33-27.

Confusion briefly reigned in Heat 11 when Jakobsen and Jensen clashed going into bend four causing both to nearly fall, the referee stopped the race and excluded the Bandit as he was the cause of the stoppage which didn't go down well with the Berwick management and in the re-run the Comets hit for five, while in Heat 12 Etheridge and Morris got extremely close coming off the second bend with the Bandit on the outside, falling on the exit to stop the race and the referee again excluded the Bandit causing more protests from the pits.

That re-run gave Workington a 2-4 to level the score again at 36-36, and going into the last heat it was still level 42-42 but it was Proctor who soared off to win as Summer tried his best to take up the lead but sadly missed out in the 3-3 than meant for the second night running Berwick and Workington completed two 45-45 draws.

Team manager Scott Courtney said: "Can't keep us apart can you? Second draw between the sides in 24 hours, and I guess to use that old speedway cliché, its the fairest result, but it also means we were THAT close to two wins, but we have the League to meet the Comets twice more and this time take the wins. However Dany is settling into his new higher team position well and has sharpened up his gating to another level and top scored for the second match running. Jye and Nikolaj were, shall we say, unfortunate with a couple of decisions, but as we cant change history we'll move on with a tinge of disappointment.

"Most importantly we, as a team, as still holding our own when the experts said we'd sink without trace, so onwards and upwards!"
